Marie Leone Bohlen was born on February 2, 1930, in Milbank, SD.  She was the daughter of Martin and Faye (Marker) Boogaard.  Marie grew up on the family farm in Grant County.  She attended school in Revillo.  Marie was united in marriage with Ado B. Bohlen on April 14, 1948, in Milbank.

Following their marriage, Marie and Ado lived and worked on various farms in Grant County. They settled on a farm south of Milbank where they raised their two children: Mary and Mike.

Marie was a hard-working farm wife. She milked the cows daily by herself. She grew beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. She never sat idle and could always be found pulling weeds.  She canned and shared her harvest with her family and friends. Marie especially loved her family and would never miss a family event. She always arrived with a pan of Rice Krispies bars and pea salad – her grandchildren’s favorites!

Marie was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She was a proud volunteer for the hospital auxiliary, The Pink Ladies. She looked forward to Tuesdays when she worked at the hospital and always had her homemade cookies to share.

Marie moved off the farm and into Milbank at age 89. She lived at St. William’s Care Center the past few months.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Mary Morton of Milbank, SD; daughter-in-law, Pat Bohlen of Milbank, SD; two brothers: Francis Boogaard of Watertown, SD; and Jim Boogaard of Milbank, SD; four grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: Martin and Faye; husband, Ado; son, Mike; son-in-law, Berton Morton; great-grandson, William Rombs; two sisters-in-law: Jorgine Boogaard and Yvonne Boogaard.
