JoAnne Berndt, age 88, of Big Stone City, SD, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at Ortonville Area Health Services Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, September 13, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City, SD. Burial will be at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in Big Stone City, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass on Monday.

Masks are required to attend the Mass. The service will be livestreamed and recorded and will be available at the bottom of this page.

JoAnne Darlene (Martin) Berndt was born on October 3, 1932, in Ortonville, MN, to Walter and Angeline (Chaloupka) Martin. She grew up in the Ortonville area and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1950.

On June 4, 1955, JoAnne was united in marriage with Norbert Joseph Berndt and their family was blessed with three children.

JoAnne was a great mother and housewife. She and Norbert and raised their children in the Big Stone City, SD, area. JoAnne had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to spend time with her family. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. JoAnne lived in her flower bed! She had the most beautiful flowers!

JoAnne was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Big Stone City. She loved animals of all kinds and had many interesting pets, including “Edgar Allan Crow”. She loved people and made a lot of friends. JoAnne was blessed to have so many wonderful neighbors and friends who helped her and made it possible to stay in her home for so long.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Lori (James) Berreth of Eureka, SD; Julie Berndt (Kevin Lohse) of Dawson, MN; and Todd (Diane) Berndt of Arlington, SD; grandchildren: Jessamyn (Andrew) Ode, Jameson (Sara) Berreth, Jenna Berndt, Nick Berndt, Lauren (Dylan) Collins, and Alex Berndt; four great-grandchildren with one on the way; and special dog, Tiki.

JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norbert, in 2010; sisters: Florence, Mavis, Elaine, and Doris; brothers: Walter, Jr., Eugene, Donald, and John.
