The Lady Bulldogs varsity volleyball team had a full day at the Ipswich Subway Invitational on Saturday, September 18. In the eight-team tournament, the Bulldogs took fourth place. The champion team received a plaque and a Subway tray for their trip home.

Milbank vs. Kimball-White LakeIn pool play, Milbank lost to Kimball-White Lake (KWL) 1-2, defeated Ipswich 2-1, and Leola-Frederick 2-0. When it came time for the tournament segment of play, they fell to Langford Area at 1-2 in the third-place match.

In their first round of pool play, Milbank lost 2-1 to KWL. Milbank took the first set at 25-13, but lost the other two at 22-25 and 14-25.  
Milbank’s serving hit 95 percent — they made 57 of 60, with Addisyn Krause scoring the Lady Bulldogs’ only ace.

Skyler Skoog was 16-16 serving; Addisyn Krause 10-10, with the ace; Casside Seezs 6-6; Hallie Schulte 12-13; Tatum Berry 7-8; and Averie Engebretson 5-6.

Tatum Berry led the team in attacking. She was 20-20 with four kills; Skyler Skoog 21-22 with four kills; Averie Engebretson 18-19 with three kills; Claire Snaza 13-17 with three kills; Casside Seezs 9-12 with two kills; Rylie Overby 5-7 with two kills; and Camryn Wiese 1-1 with one kill.
Addisyn Krause led the team in assists. She recorded 30-31, with eight assists; Camryn Wiese, 39-39 with six assists; and Averie Engebretson 13-13 with three assists.
Addisyn Krause contributed 17 digs. Hallie Schulte and Tatum Berry each had 13.

Milbank vs. Ipswich In the game against Ipswich, MHS Coach Nancy Hoeke said, “Rylie Overby got her first varsity start and did a nice job being among the attack leaders. We competed very nicely in the Ipswich match. All parts of the game flowed better together.” 
 

“The girls showed their resiliency after stalling out at the end of the first set,” Hoeke added. “They continued to play hard and make the right things happen to put themselves in a place to win set No. 2. It was close, but we hung in there. In the third, it seemed the pressure got to the Tigers. They made a number of errors at the end to help us out.”  Set scores were 20-25, 25-22, and 25-19.

Coach Hoeke was especially pleased with the Lady Bulldogs’ serving. “We went 97 percent with seven aces. That creates pressure on the opponent!” she added. Milbank’s serving was 69 of 71.

Hallie Schulte was tops at 17-17, with three aces. Rylie Overby followed at 13-13 with one ace; Shaylee Schuchard 7-7; Skyler Skoog 6-6; Tatum Berry 6-6; Averie Engebretson 15-16 with three aces; and Addisyn Krause 5-6.
Rylie Overby led the team in attacking, She went 24-24 with six kills.
Averie Engebretson was 21-25 with six kills; Claire Snaza 12-14 with five kills; Shaylee Schuchard 20-26 with five kills; Addisyn Krause 8-11 with four kills; and Tatum Berry 8-13 with two kills.

Addisyn Krause did her part on the attack. She was 34-34 with 12 assists; Camryn Wiese was 21-23 with seven assists; and Averie Engebretson at 16-16 with six assists.

Hallie Schulte kept things moving with 13 digs. She was joined by Tatum Berry with 11 and Addisyn Krause with eight.
Milbank vs. Leola-FrederickCoach Hoeke said, “In the game against Leola-Frederick, the girls used LF errors and a couple of nice plays to keep from going to three sets. When you can be down five points at 19-23 and then set point 20-24 and pull out a win, that’s awesome!”

The Lady Bulldogs’ serving was at 92 percent with 46 of 50, including five aces. Skyler Skoog led the way at 12-12, with one ace. Casside Seezs was 7-7, with two  aces; Averie Engebretson 7-7; Addisyn Krause 4-4; Shaylee Schuchard 3-3;

Casside Seezs led the team in attacking at 15-18 with four kills. Rylie Overby was 17-20 with four kills; Averie Engebretson 19-22, with three kills; Skyer Skoog 11-14 with three kills; Addisyn Krause 2-2, with two kills; Tatum Berry 8-11 with two kills; Claire Snaza 9-12, with two kills; and Shaylee Schuchard 5-5, with one kill.

Addisyn Krause was 28-28 with eight assists; Camryn Wiese 14-14, with seven assists; Averie Engebretson 14-15 with six assists.
Rylie Overby kept the ball rolling with eight digs. Skyler Skoog had eight; Averie Engebretson seven, and Tatum Berry and Addisyn Krause had five apiece. Averie Engebretson and Claire Snaza each had an assisted block.

Milbank vs. Langford Area
The Lady Bulldogs then met the Langford Area Lions in the tournament. Coach Hoeke said, “Langford has a good team and they do a few things to disrupt the flow of the game. They like to mix in tips and send over the second ball. It’s hard to be ready for that and we struggled at times with their strategy.”

At the end of the first set, Shaylee Schuchard got us three points for the win with a block and two kills. That was quite exciting,” Hoeke recalled.
“I think we ran out of steam at the end, though, and weren’t able to play good enough defense to slow them down.” The Lady Bulldogs lost with set scores of 25-20, 21-25, and 19-25 to take home fourth place in the tournament 

Their serving dropped to 86 percent at 57 of 66. They made five aces.

Leading attackers were: Rylie Overby 22-24, with seven kills; Skyler Skoog 18-24, with seven kills; Shaylee Schuchard 13-14. with four kills; Averie Engebretson 13-14, with two kills; Casside Seezs 12-16, with two kills; and Tatum Berry 3-4, with one kill.

Averie Engebretson led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 assists, Addisyn Krause had six, and Camryn Wiese added four. Hallie Schulte recorded 15 digs, Averie Engebretson seven, and Emily Wollschlager had five. Shaylee Schuchard made the Lady Bulldogs’ one solo block.

Hallie Schulte was named to the all-tournament team.
