The Children’s Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin is the 2021 One Book South Dakota selection. Kierra Ball, a South Dakota Humanities Council scholar, will lead a discussion of the book at the Grant County Public Library on September 27.  

The event begins at 7 p.m. and wil be hosted by The Friends of Grant County Library.  The event was also made possible with a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council.   Jody Carlson, director of the GCPL says, “The Library still has copies of the book available for checkout.  Also, South Dakota Titles to Go (Overdrive/Libby) has collectively purchased eBooks and audiobooks as a simultaneous use title from September 15 through December 15. There are no limits or holds on the copies on Overdrive/Libby during this period.”   The Children’s Blizzard is a historical novel Inspired by a ferocious storm that struck Dakota Territory in 1888.  Benjamin tells the fictional stories of sisters Raina and Gerda Olsen, schoolteachers in southeastern South Dakota and northeastern Nebraska, who make very different decisions on that fateful day.
