September is Intergeneration Month. At a recent get-together, the Johnson family took a photo to celebrate four generations. Jayce, two, and Jacksyn, nine months, are the newest members of the Johnson family. They are shown here with their dad, Jessy, of Milbank; their grandfather, Rusty Johnson of South Shore; and their great grandmother, Lillian Johnson of Madison, Minnesota.

The Intergenerational Foundation launched Intergeneration Month, held each September, to connect generations and to prompt folks from varying age groups to befriend and learn from each other.

In South Dakota, the generations often share a connection to the land and agriculture, and that is true for the Johnsons.  Jessy and Rusty are both employed at LaBolt Farmers Grain. Rusty was raised on Great Grandma Lillian’s farm, and Jayce and Jacksyn’s mother, McKenzie (nee Krakow), grew up on her parents’ multi-generational ranch near Strandburg.
