The Whetstone Valley Strings Studio presented a recital and reception on Sunday, November 21, at Valley Baptist Church. Students performed a variety of solos and duets, including classical pieces, folk songs, hymns, and fiddle tunes. The fiddle tunes featured Chris Hicks on guitar and drum set and Mrs. Schulte on double bass.
The finale was a string orchestra arrangement of Carol of the Bells that featured Merik Junker on drum set.
The recital was the first time students performed with a double bass. The instrument was originally purchased by Dr. Reynen and given to Dave Page. Page, in turn, donated it to Whetstone Valley Strings.
Joseph and Rachel Schulte were honored for playing in the 2021 SDHSAA All-State Orchestra. Nicholas and Veronica Fonder were recognized for their SDHSAA All-State Orchestra auditions. Krista Gingerich and Joseph and Traci Tschetter were recognized for their SDMEA Middle School All-State auditions, and Alana Wipf was commended for her Book 1 Half-Book Review.
Whetstone Valley Strings was started five years ago by Elizabeth Schulte, and has grown from seven students to twenty-four violin and cello students.
