Schuelke and Grant Place Second at Jefferson High Invitational

Max Schuelke and Qualon Grant, members of the MHS novice public forum debate team, placed second in the Jefferson Cavalier Invitational Debate Tournament on Saturday, December 4. It was the first debate tournament hosted by the Cavaliers at the new Jefferson High School in Sioux Falls.
Coach Kathy Tyler says, “Qualon and Max’s regular debate partners were unable to attend, so the boys teamed up, learned each other’s styles and arguments, and did an amazing job against debaters from Jefferson, Washington, and Lincoln high schools.” The Milbank debaters participated in five rounds and finished with a 4-1 record.
Seven other schools attended to make a total of 13 public forum teams. Teams were paired randomly for the first two rounds and then were “powered”— winning teams kept competing against winning teams.
Coach Tyler says, “It was a good day. Debaters have been working hard to improve their skills and techniques, and it’s paying off! Next semester starts the second season for individual events, and any students who wish to join the IE team are welcome.”
Next up for the Bulldogs? The conference tournament on December 11 and the highly-anticipated Brookings Bell from December 17-18.
