Nine swimmers from the Milbank Area Lions Swim Team (MALST) competed in a state-qualifying meet in Watertown on February 11-13. There were quite a few firsts at this meet.

Timbree Spors, age 10, swam in the 100 IM and the 200 IM for the first time in competition. She placed third in the 200 IM and seventh in the 100IM and qualfied for the state meet in both events. She also took first in the 25-meter breaststroke, first in the 50-meter breaststroke, sixth in the 50-meter butterfly, ninth in the 50-meter freestyle, eighth in the 100-meter freestyle, sixth in the 50-meter backstroke, and sixth in the 100-meter backstroke. 

Senior Swimmer Savanna Osowski, age 17, took home first place in eight events. She topped the field in the mile (1650 yards), the 100-meter freestyle, the 100-meter breaststroke, the 50-meter breaststroke, the 400 IM, the 100-meter butterfly, the 50-meter freestyle, and the 500-yard freestyle. 

Bryton Blauert, age 11, swam in the first meet of his swimming career. Bryton qualified for the upcoming state meet in the 50-yard backstroke by placing fifth with a time of 40.60. He also placed second in the 25-meter breaststroke, 13th in the 50-meter freestyle, ninth in the 100-meter backstroke, and 11th in the 200-meter freestyle.  

Hope Karels, age 16,  placed first in the 1000-meter freestyle, fifth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke, sixth in the 200-meter backstroke, third in the 400 IM, sixth in the 100-meter butterflyfly, fifth in the 100-meter backstroke, eighth in the 200-meter freestyle, and fifth in the 500-meter freestyle. 

TyLynn Wellnitz, age 9, placed first in the 25-meter butterfly, fourth in the 200 IM, seventh in the 50-meter butterfly, 10th in the 50-meter freestyle, fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke, fourth in the 100-meter freestyle, fifth in the 50-meter breaststroke, fifth in the 100 IM, and fourth in the 200-meter freestyle.

Ryan Steffen, age 9, placed first in the 25-meter freestyle, first in the 25-meter backstroke, second in the 25-meter breaststroke, eighth in the 50-meter freestyle, eighth in the 100-meter freestyle, fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke, fourth in the 50-meter backstroke, and seventh in the 100 IM.

Senior William Karels, age 18, placed fourth in the 100-meter freestyle, second in the 200 IM, second in the 100-meter breaststroke, third in the 400 IM, fifth in the 100-meter butterfly, second in the 100-meter backstroke, fifth in the 200-meter freestyle, fifth in the 50-meter freestyle, and fifth in the 500-meter freestyle.

Adrienne Korth, age 11, placed 11th in the 200 IM, eighth in the 100-meter butterfly, and 11th in the 200-meter freestyle..

Jada Leigh Wellnitz, age 11, placed 12th in the 200 IM, 11th in the 100-meter backstroke, and 12th in the 200-meter freestyle.

What’s up next for MALST? All of these swimmers are headed to a 2022 State A Championship Meet. Swimmers age 12-and-under will compete in Pierre on February 26-27. Swimmers age 13-and-up will compete in Mitchell from March 3-6.
