The 2022 Special Olympics Spring Track & Field event will be held in Milbank on April 29. The event will feature more than 20 track and field events and host an estimated 250-300 athletes. This will mark the first time the event will be held in Milbank and volunteers are needed to make it a success.

Traditionally the games have been conducted in Watertown, but due to Covid in 2020, Abbey Trapp, Milbank’s special education teacher and coach, petitioned the Special Olympics Board to request a change of venue. Peggy Greiner, special services secretary, and coach will co-coordinate the event.

The event will be held at A.B. Campbell Stadium from 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m. on Friday, April 29.  About 80 volunteers are required for a variety of positions. If you can measure, retrieve shot put balls, run timers or ribbon writers, or guide athletes to where they need to go, they need your help!  If you can be a recorder, a starter, a food server, or even a cheerleader, don’t hesitate to sign up to help!

The organizers of the event report the participants will be school age and over 21. “Special Olympics is a very important life-changing event for these participants. When they see and hear others cheering them on, it encourages them and gives them confidence. See them smile!
