Max Schuelke took second place in US Extemp in the 2022 SDHSAA State Debate and Individual Championships in Harrisburg on March 4 -5. Coach Kathy Tyler said, “At the state tournament only varsity teams are allowed. The MHS team accepted the challenges of competing against students with three or four years of experience and have been adding skills and arguments to their repertoires.”
The team of Qualon Grant and Max Schuelke and teammates Shane Spiering and Rylen Frerichs participated in the Public Forum division. Frerichs and Ivy Lewno each participated in Original Oratory. Frerichs and Spiering also each participated in International Extemp. Grant entered Informative Oratory and US Extemp.
Coach Kathy Tyler said, “I can’t say it enough—I am so proud of Milbank’s debate team, especially the freshman boys. They have gone above and beyond any expectations, I had at the beginning of the year. They work hard, take losses as a learning experience, smile, and are making plans for next year.”
Frerichs, Schuelke, and Camila Monroy, are also participating in the national qualifier for Student Congress on Thursday, March 10.
