Students in Mrs. Robin Patnoe’s second-grade class at Milbank Elementary welcomed MPD’s police chief, Boyd VanVooren, as their Junior Achievement teacher. Junior Achievement is a program taught by local community members.

The second graders were focused on communities, businesses, and goods and services. One of their activities was to create a cupcake. The kids drew a picture and described their cupcake in writing. They wrote about the cake’s flavor, filling, frosting, and topping.

Mrs. Patnoe remarked, “The kids were very creative. The judges ultimately picked Grayson Brotzel’s creation. His cupcake was a cheesecake flavor with a strawberry filling, lemon frosting, and a cherry on top. He called it Cheesecake Catastrophe.”

After the selection was made, Annette VanVooren, wife of B. Van Vooren and the owner of the Sugar Shack, baked the cupcake according to Brotzel’s description. There was no evidence left for Chief VanVooren. It all disappeared during class.
