The Firechiefs were back in action on Friday, June 10, against Lake Norden. Milbank defeated the Lakers 3-1 in a pitchers’ duel that included a combined total of 31 strikeouts.
The two teams were scoreless in a defensive match until the sixth inning. Milbank got the offense going when Taylor Boerger was hit by a pitch. Kaden Krause drew a walk after T. Boerger stole second to put him into scoring position. Brady Krause drew a walk at the next at-bat to load the bases. T. Boerger then came around to score on a wild pitch to give Milbank a 1-0 lead, but the Firechiefs weren’t done. With runners on second and third with only one out, Lance Frogner hit a sacrifice fly deep to left field to score K. Krause and move the score to 2-0.
Milbank added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 3-1. Kellen Hoeke drew a one-out walk followed by another walk from Justin Larson to put runners on first and second with only one gone in the seventh. T. Boerger legged out an infield single which scored Hoeke from third after he had advanced on a passed ball. Milbank led 3-1 and held on for the victory.
T. Boerger earned the win on the mound. He pitched five innings and tallied eight strikeouts along the way. Dom Boerger finished the last four innings and picked up the save. He also struck out eight batters.
The Firechiefs come face-to-face with Lake Norden again on Wednesday, June 15, at 8 p.m. at Pribyl Park in Milbank.
