Milbank’s Post 9 Legion Baseball team traveled to Gregory last weekend to play in the 2022 Class B Legion State Tournament. In game one, Post 9 battled Redfield and fell 16-1. They also suffered a 10-5 loss to Platte in their second game.

Vermillion Post 1 took the state title in a finish that went down to the wire. On Saturday, Post 1 had been defeated by Winner-Colome, but they fought their way back by winning four straight elimination games in the loser’s bracket.  In the title game on Tuesday, they defeated Winner-Colome 8-7 in extra innings. The game featured a grand slam in the top of the sixth, a tie at the end of regulation, and a time-out when two umpires got overheated and the game had to be halted.

Highlights from Milbank’s games: In game one, Milbank’s lone run came in the bottom of the second. Isaac Schulte led off with a single.  He was followed by Justus Osborn, who was hit by a pitch. Mikey Karges singled to right field to put Milbank on the board, but they still lagged behind Redfield at 4-1.

In game two, Milbank came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kaden Krause led off with a single, and  Kellen Hoeke followed with another single to put runners on first and third with one out. Merik Junker’s sac fly to center scored Krause and put up a run for Milbank. They trailed at 9-1. Osborn drew a walk and Schulte followed him with a single to take the score to 9-2. Bryce Lamp doubled to center to score Osborne and Schulte and get Milbank back in the game at 9-4.  Schulte then scored Lamp with an RBI single to left to inch Post 9 closer at 9-5. But, Milbank’s hot streak came up short. They fell 10-5 to end their tournament appearance and their season.
