A classic pitchers’ duel between Milbank’s Dom Boerger and Mount Vernon’s Luke Tiesler ended the Firechiefs’ 2022 quest for the state championship title. Their 2-3 loss came in the second round of the single-elimination tournament on Sunday evening, August 7, in Mitchell.  The battle on the mound might have continued all night if the Mustangs hadn’t eked out a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth to score the go-ahead run and take a 3-2 lead heading into the home stretch. But the Firechiefs could only shake loose one walk in the ninth, and the Mustangs took the win.

Both pitchers went the distance. For the Firechiefs, Boerger threw 128 pitches in eight innings and fanned 17 batters.  He struck out the side four times and sat down nine batters in a row. When the dust had settled, Boerger gave up three earned runs on six hits.

For the Mustangs, Luke Tiesler pitched nine innings and surrendered two earned runs on four hits.

At the plate for Milbank, Kaden Krause chalked up one hit and an RBI. Taylor Boerger, Justin Larson, and Lance Frogner contributed one hit apiece. Travis Lester also drove in a run.
Mount Vernon advances to the quarter-final game on Thursday to face Garretson. Garretson defeated Madison 11-1 in the second round.
