Three MHS golfers and their coach, Mark Keeton, attended the 2022 High School Boys State A Golf Tournament at Moccasin Creek Golf Course in Aberdeen October 3-4. Freshman Jonathan DeBoer tied for 24th place. He shot an 84 on the front nine and a 77 on the back to card a 161.

“We have been playing some of our best golf towards the end of the season, and it showed at the state tournament,” Coach Keeton commented.  “Jonathan played very solid for two days and was able to pick up his first medal at state.  It’s hard to believe this was already his third trip.”

Owen Fischer, a sophomore, and Joshua Keeton, a junior, each shot a 178 to tie for  54th place.  “Owen  just wrapped up his second straight trip, and Josh made his debut,” Coach Keeton said. “I know they will both tell you they left some strokes out there but their average was in the 80s. This is a big improvement from last season.”

Keeton Newborg of Tea Area earned the distinction of individual medalist. He shot a 145. Trey Even of West Central and Dakota Munger of Chamberlain tied for second at 148.

“Now we can start looking towards next year and do our best to qualify as a team,” Keeton said. “This will not be easy as two teams from our region finished in the top three, but we have a great group of boys who will put in he time.”

Vermillion won its first boys golf team state championship since 2007. The top team standings included:  (1) Vermillion (2) Aberdeen Roncalli (3) Tie – Dakota Valley and Sioux Valley (5) West Central (6) St. Thomas More – Rapid City (7) Groton (8) Chamberlain (9) Winner Area  (10)  Belle Fourche (11) Parkston (12) Rapid City Christian.

“I am also extremely proud of the boys and the way they conducted themselves and represented Milbank,” Coach Keeton added. “Moccasin Creek Country Club did a great job setting up the course, and we were treated to two great days of golf!”
