The Milbank Middle School Student Council organized a book drive for their first quarter service project. The council challenged each homeroom class to bring at least 30 books from home to donate.
The students responded with youth series, children’s books, elementary chapter books, and adult selections. But, the students didn’t stop at just 30 books. Altogether, they collected over 2,000 books. Mr. Olson’s homeroom was named the grand winner. His class amassed 727 books.
The books will, in turn, be donated to libraries at The Beacon Center in Watertown, on South Dakota reservations, and the Castlewood Elementary School. The community of Castlewood was hit by a devastating tornado on May 12, and their school sustained extensive damaged. Half of the building was rendered structurally unsound. Classes have been held in two local churches since September 6. Coincidentally, the superintendent of the Castlewood School District is named Peter Books.
