Gene Michael Oslund of Mt. Enterprise, TX, formerly of Big Stone City, SD, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022, at Panola Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, TX.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Rev. Dr. DeVern Schwenn will officiate. Tim Mundwiler will provide the music. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date.

Gene was born on July 11, 1958, to Fred and Dorothy (Lowery) Oslund in Sisseton, SD. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Summit, SD, and graduated as Valedictorian of the Summit High School Class of 1976.

After high school Gene moved to Clinton, MN, and then to Big Stone City, SD, and worked as a welder at Morris Rod Weeder in Ortonville, MN. He then went to work at Saputo Cheese Factory in Big Stone City, as a “cheese squeezer” as he called it and was very proud of the fact that he learned to make cheese.

On October 18, 1980, Gene was united in marriage with Peggy Hofhenke at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville, MN. To this union two children were born: Michael Gene Oslund and Amanda Jo Oslund.

On May 4, 2003, Gene was united in marriage with Gloria Diane Hogan at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City, and through adoption, a daughter, Aubrey, joined the family.

Gene had an incredible memory and could read or hear something once and never forget it. He often got in into trouble with his teachers when he correct them because we was usually right!

Gene always had a love for the family farm and spent many days there farming, working, and putting up alfalfa. He enjoyed deer hunting and shooting his guns and reloading his own ammunition. He also enjoyed restoring old International tractors and spent many hours working on them. In 2014, he had to give up his job at Saputo due to declining health. He and his family moved to Henderson, TX, and he took six of his tractors with him. In 2019, as his health declined, he sold his tractors and the family moved to Mt. Enterprise, TX, where he lived until his heath continued to worsen and he entered the health care facility.

Gene is survived by his wife, Diane; son, Michael (Lisa) Oslund of Watertown, SD; daughter, Aubrey Oslund of Mt. Enterprise, TX; mother-in-law, Syble Bassett of Henderson, TX; step-daughters: Jamie Riepe of Houston, TX; and Cassie Roberts of Pittsburg, TX; siblings: Wesley (Patsy) Sowers of Gillette, WY; Danny (Linda) Oslund of Watertown, SD; Darlene (Dennis) Halajian of Big Stone City, SD; and Fred (Susan) Oslund of Stockholm, SD; four grandchildren: Cody, Hailey, John, and Kylee Oslund; four step-grandchildren: Drew, Jessica, Shaina, and Mason Bock; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and good friend, Terry Forster of Milbank, SD.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Dorothy Oslund; daughter, Amanda Oslund; and brother, John Oslund.
