Faye Athey

Faye Elaine Athey, age 80, of Milbank, SD, passed away on December 22, 2022, at Milbank Area Hospital – Avera Health.

Funeral services for Faye will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Tabor United Methodist Church in Big Stone City. Rev. Barbara

McKewen will officiate. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Big City. Visitation will be at the church, one hour prior to the service. Urn bearers will be: Chris Van Hout and Kevin Van Hout.

Faye Elaine (Gibson) Athey was born on March 14, 1942, in Graceville, MN. She was the daughter of Otto R. and Lucille (Stargell) Gibson. Faye attended school in Graceville. She was united in marriage with George Phillip Athey on June 20, 1959, in Beardsley, MN.

Faye and George were blessed with four children: Thomas, Barbara, Patrick, and Kurt. She raised her family while also working at the Big Stone Liquor Store for 29 years. She later worked at several different odd jobs.

Faye was a faithful member of Tabor United Methodist Church. She was a proud member of the Big Stone Legion Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered many years at the voting polls. A favorite pastime was playing darts on Thursday evenings, which she enjoyed for many years. She loved her family and adored time spent together.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Thomas (Lisa) Athey of Milbank, SD; Barbara (David) Van Hout of Milbank, SD; Patrick Athey of Big Stone City, SD; and Kurt (Tammy) Athey of Brookings, SD; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Chris) Gibson of Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Faye was preceded in death by her parents: Otto and Lucille; and one sister, Judy.
