The annual Floyd Farrand Boys Wrestling Invitational was held on December 29, at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls. The 2022 event featured 20... Barrett Schneck Now No.1-Ranked Wrestler in South Dakota

The annual Floyd Farrand Boys Wrestling Invitational was held on December 29, at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls. The 2022 event featured 20 teams from across the state. Milbank garnered seventh place.

Individually for the Bulldogs, senior Barrett Schneck took first place at 170 pounds. Barrett is now the No.1-ranked wrestler in South Dakota Class A at 170 pounds. “Barrett wrestled his way through the tournament without much trouble,’ commented Josh Schmeichel, head coach for MHS. “He ended up beating the No. 3-ranked Class A wrestler (at the time) in the semis and the No. 1 wrestler in the finals, commented Josh Schmeichel, head coach for MHS.”  After his final victory, Barrett became the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the state.

Jesse Schneck, a sophomore, took fourth place. Jesse did really well at this tournament,” Schmeichel said. “Just placing is tough to do, but going out and getting fourth is pretty impressive. His two losses were to two really good kids.”

Owen Fischer won sixth-place honors. Schmeichel, said, “Owen finished the tournament with the most pins in the quickest amount of time. Owen is one of those wrestlers who goes out to give it everything he has. He started off with two pins before getting sent to the wrestlebacks. From there, he got two more pins and then lost the next two for sixth place.”

Junior Landon Novy fought his way to seventh place. “Landon started off with a loss in his first match, so he had to wrestle his way back into placing,” Schmeichel commented. Tate Schlueter, a sophomore, received eighth place. “Tate ended up moving up a weight class when Barrett moved down,” Schmeichel explained. “For being a bit underweight, Tate went out and did really well. It will be fun to see how he does as he fills out into this new weight.”

Brayden Christenson did not place, but Schmeichel said, “Tate had a rough draw. Even though he did not place, he definitely wrestled hard. The two matches he ended up losing were in overtime against South Dakota’s No. 4-ranked Class A wrestler and the No. 2-ranked Class B wrestler. The Floyd Ferrand Tournament has always been a tough tournament and this year was no different.”  In the team competition, Brandon Valley finished with five individual champions and piled up 268.5 points to take the crown. Watertown had three champs and accrued 250 points to take the runner-up spot.

“After taking so much time off because of sickness and the weather, it was nice to be able to compete again,” Schmeichel added, “but we were at a disadvantage compared to some of the other teams who had (attended) three times as many matches. We had some ground to make up, and I think many of the boys stepped up to that challenge.”

The top-ten team awards went to: (1) Brandon Valley (2) Watertown (3) Sturgis (4) Tea Area (5) Brookings (6) Sioux Falls Jefferson (7) Milbank; (8) Wagner (9) O’Gorman and (10) Parkston.

On Friday, December 30, Lincoln High reopened its doors for the inaugural 2022 Floyd Farrand Girls Invitational. Girls had participated beside the boys in last year’s tourney, but this was the first year the girls staged a separate tournament. Spearfish won the team championship. Lakota Tech was the runner up. Brookings captured third place.
