The Milbank girls basketball team is on a roll at  6-0 in 2023. Their latest win was a 40-33 victory in the game against Groton on Thursday, January 19, at home. 

In the first half, Groton made a valiant attempt to rattle Milbank’s cage and the Lady Tigers took the lead by as much as six in the second quarter. Milbank settled down after the half and surged ahead by 11 as the clock started to wind down. The Lady Bulldogs continued to keep the Lady Tigers at bay by only allowing them seven points in the fourth to give Milbank their sixth ”W” in a row at 40-33.

The Lady Bulldogs passed the ball around and five players put up significant points. Maurina Street led the charge with 12 points and six rebounds. Siera Wenzl dropped in 10 points, including two three-pointers, and took command of one rebound. Isabella Anderson made seven points and grabbed six rebounds. Claire Snaza put up six points and took down five rebounds. Tyra Berry added five points.

Milbank hit 55 percent from the floor, including 57 percent from long range. They knocked down 80 percent from the charity stripe. 

Groton made 27 percent of their field goals, including just 19 percent of their three-point shots. They hit just one free throw of their four attempts for 25 percent.

Sydney Leicht was Groton’s top producer. She recorded 11 points and four rebounds. Jaedyn Penning made eight points and three rebounds. Kennedy Hanson had seven points and a rebound. Brooke Gengerke contributed three points and four rebounds.

What’s next for the Lady Bulldogs? Milbank hosts Deuel on Thursday, January 26.

C Team Milbank: 15 vs. Groton 19 Belle Pauli knocked down 10 points in the C team’s game against Groton on January 19, but Milbank couldn’t quite tame the Lady Tigers. The final score was 19-15. According to Eric Townsend, coach for the Lady Bulldogs, Milbank took their first loss of the season. 

Avery Schuneman added three points for the Lady Dawgs, when she swished in a three pointer. Jacy Dexter made two points..

Taryn Traphagen and McKenna Tietz led Groton’s scoring with six points apiece. Traphagen dropped in two three-pointers, and Tietz made three two-point shots.  Mia Crank contributed three points. Emily Clark and Kella Tracy each chipped in two. 

Milbank trailed 6-8 at the end of the first quarter and again at the half at 13-11. The third-quarter score found them trailing by three at 13-16, but they couldn’t push ahead of the Lady Tigers and suffered the loss at 15-19.
Townsend reminds all the fans of the C team that the girls do not have a game scheduled this week. See them in action again on Saturday, January  28, when they take on Dakota Valley in Sioux Falls.
