Two teams from Milbank participated in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition on Wednesday, February 8, at Northern State University in Aberdeen. Team One was composed of Taylor Hallquist,  Kylynn Schwandt, Rylan Wendland, and Jeter Scoular.  Macy Mueller, Ava Sichmeller, Darin Hagen, and Tate Pew made up Team Two.

The MATHCOUNTS Competition program is in its 29th year as a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of “bee” style contests. The “bees” are held in all 50 states and U.S. territories.  In South Dakota, the South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES) hosts the local and state competitions, which are typically held in February and March.

According to the SDES, former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Ronald  Reagan all recognized MATHCOUNTS in White House ceremonies. The MATHCOUNTS program received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. Mathletes® were also featured in hour-long ESPN programs during each of the national competitions held from 2003-2005 and again in 2011.
