Garrett Mertens and Joe Schulte both hit double figures — Mertens with 19 points and Schulte with 10 – in the annual Battle of... Mertens and Schulte Team Up for 29 Points in the Battle of the Bulldogs

Garrett Mertens and Joe Schulte both hit double figures — Mertens with 19 points and Schulte with 10 – in the annual Battle of the Bulldogs. This year, the rivals met in Milbank on Monday, February 20. Milbank took the loss at 57-45. 

Justus Osborn, Yohana Ajwanga, Graham Lightfield, and Aiden Ludvigson also added three points apiece to the Bulldogs’ totals. Jaxson Wildung and Emmett Hanson scored two. Osborn and Mertens were the leading rebounders for Milbank. Each pulled down five. Wildung followed with four, Schulte with three, Lightfield with two. Ajwanga, Max Lightfield, and Eli Johnson fielded one rebound apiece. Schulte was also credited with two blocks and a steal..

Madison had three players in double figures. Chuck Callahan made 17 points and four rebounds. Aiden Jensen posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Eli Barger made 10 points and nabbed five rebounds. Ben Brooks followed with eight points and seven rebounds.

Milbank hit nearly 31 percent of their shots from the floor, including 27 percent from 3-point land. They knocked in seven of their 15 free throw attempts for 47 percent.

Madison finished with a 42 percent shooting average overall, including 40 percent from long range. They downed five of six from behind the stripe for 83 percent.

What’s next for Milbank? The varsity Dawgs travel to Agency Village on Friday, February 24 to take on Tiospa Zina.  There will be no JV or C-Team games.  The varsity teams tip off at 5:15 p.m.

JV TeamMilbank 40 vs. Madison 35 The JV team won their Battle of the Bulldogs against Madison on Monday, February 20, on the road, but Madison turned it into an interesting game. Milbank kept Madison on the ropes through three quarters. They led 12-2, 17-7, and 30-15, but Madison suddenly came to life in the fourth and decided to dump in 20 points. Milbank relied on its cushion and added another 10 points to hang on and take home the victory. 

Este Abrego-Gonzalez led Milbank in scoring.with seven ticks, but everyone lit up the scoreboard.  Josh Pederson and Emmett Hanson each scored six.  Jack Howard and Josh Lightfield each made five. Howard had four rebounds and Lightfield had three. Bryan Meyer dropped in four points and grabbed three rebounds. Sebastian Hooth made three points and two rebounds. Ryan Keeton and Braylen Bowsher each scored two points. Hooth nabbed two rebounds and Keeton had one.

MIlbank 39 percent from the floor, including 23 percent from beyond the arc. They nailed 13 of their free throw attempts for 54 percent. 

Madison hit 35 percent of their field goals – 31 percent from long range. They made three of eight from the charity stripe for 37.5 percent.

C-Team—Milbank 28 vs. Madison 46

The C team suffered a 46-28 loss during the annual Battle of the Bulldogs in Madison on Monday, February 20. 

Milbank’s Charlie Peery was the leading  scorer in the game. He pumped in 12 points. Este Abrego-Gonzalez and Layten Osowski each put up six. Abrego-Gonzalez added five rebounds and Osowski had one. 

Garrett Weber was the leading rebounder for MIlbank.  He hauled down five. Weber also contributed two points. Keeton, Weber, Osowski, and Ethan Owen all got credit for a steal. Abrego-Gonzalez earned a block.

Milbank shot 26 percent from the floor. Madison ended at 58 percent.  Milbank downed four of ten from the line and Madison hit three of six.
