The third grader’s classes at Milbank Elementary had their reading book come to life on March 1. The students had been reading the story, Aero and Officer Mike, which profiles a day in the life of a professionally-trained K-9 and his police-officer partner.

Mrs. Schulte explained, “We have a K-9 in Milbank, but she was unable to come to the school with her handler, Deputy Wes Bowsher, because they are in training for six weeks.”  Deputy Bowsher, however, referred her to Deputy Zach Angerhofer of the Roberts County Sheriff’s Department. Angerhofer, who incidentally is a graduate of Milbank High School, agreed to visit the students.

“It turns out that Deputy Zach is the uncle of my student Vayda Heisinger, and she was so excited to be able to introduce him to the class,” Mrs. Schulte added. The third graders watched Beau, the Narcotics K-9, in action as he performed a search for a hidden scent.

Mrs. Schulte thanked the deputy and his dog for the demonstration and said, “There were lots of questions. Each student even got to pet Beau. It was a great day!”
