Mary Jane (Miller) Shape was born on July 26, 1938, at her family home in Summit, SD. She was the daughter of Ray and Mary (Ward) Miller. Mary Jane grew up in Summit and attended Summit schools. She was united in marriage with Raymond Joseph Shape on May 21, 1955. They made their home on a farm east of Summit and were blessed with six children: William, Colette, Bill, Chris, John, and Rick. William died in infancy. The family later moved to Strandburg and expanded their family to include Jamie and the twins, Robert and Ronald.

Following retirement, Mary Jane and Ray moved to Rapid City, SD, and enjoyed living near the Black Hills for 22 years. They enjoyed watching their grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their varied school, dance, sporting events, and livestock showing. Mary Jane and Ray greatly enjoyed traveling as well.

Ray passed away on June 22, 2013, in Las Vegas, NV, while celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary. Although she always loved the Black Hills, her love for her family brought her back east river after Ray’s death.

Mary Jane was a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe of the Lake Traverse Reservation (Big Coulee District). Her great-grandmother, Lucy TaPahinBdaywin Heminger, was a sister to Chief Sitting Bull. Her name means “women who fixes her hair fancy”.

Left to cherish Mary Jane’s memory are her children:  Colette (Gene) Panning of Bloomfield, NE; Christine (Gary) Johnson of Yankton, SD; Raymond Shape Jr. of Spencer, SD; Jamie (Terri) Shape of Bridgewater, SD; Robert (Teresa) Shape of Hot Springs, SD; and Ronald (Trahnee) Shape of Black Hawk, SD; 28 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and siblings: Donald Miller and Yvonne Hills.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ray and Mary (Ward) Miller; husband, Raymond; sons: William, Bill, and Richard; and siblings: Richard Miller, Joan Mors, and Marilyn Hawkinson.
