Eric Townsend, head coach for the Milbank track and field teams said, “There were four meets last week –Valley Queen Cheese, Sisseton TwiLight, Howard... MHS Leads the ‘Whey” at Valley Queen Track Meet

Eric Townsend, head coach for the Milbank track and field teams said, “There were four meets last week –Valley Queen Cheese, Sisseton TwiLight, Howard Wood Relays, and the Webster Quad.” Milbank secured many of the top places at the Valley Queen meet in Milbank on Tuesday, May 2. 

“At the Valley Queen meet, we had another chance to compete at home and to see some NEC and region teams we had not seen this season. The weather was a little windy, but both teams placed very high and had a number of season bests.”

Some of the highlights for the boys: The 3200-meter relay team of James Batchelor, Bryan Meyer, Garrett Mertens, and Payton Brown took first place. Max Lightfield took second place in the 110-meter hurdles.  Brown took first place in the 1600-meter run, and Batchelor took second.  Brown also took second in the 800-meter run.  Isaac Graham took second in the 3200-meter run. The Bulldog Relay team took first place. Brown, Meyer,  Batchelor, and Mertens each ran a leg. Jayden Johnson took second place in the pole vault event at 13′ 6″.

Highlights for the girls: The 3200-meter relay team of Maurina Street, Zayda Townsend, Bianca Berry, and Ellie Neugebauer soared to first place. Siera Wenzl took second in the 100-meter dash. The 800-meter relay team took first place. Laney Forrette, Isabella Anderson, Ella Sandvig, and Nadia Thue each ran a leg.  Forrette, Gemma Street, Jacy Dexter, and Wenzl captured first place in the 400-meter relay.  Townsend secured first place in the 400-meter dash.  Dexter took first place and Forrette took second in the 200-meter dash.  

Berry was No. 1 in the 3200-meter run. M. Street, Anderson, Neugebauer, and Wenzl won the Bulldog Relay. In the pole vault competition, Dexter took first to move to second of all time on the MHS Varsity Honor Roll.  Maggie Kruger took second to land in second place at the meet and third place on the MHS Varsity Honor Roll. Rylie Scoular and Townsend also made it into the top ten at the meet and the all-time top ten of the MHS Varsity Honor Roll.  Averie Engebretson took third at the meet in the shot competition and moved up to No. 5 on the Varsity Honor Roll with her throw of 35′ 6″.  

What’s next  for Milbank?  The Northeast Conference meet for the pole vault division takes place on Wednesday, May 10, in Webster. The Northeast Conference meet for all the other events takes place on Thursday, May 11 in Groton. That meet starts at 11 am.   
 

“Both teams (MHS boys and girls) are in a great position to make a run for another Northeast Conference team championship,” Townsend commented. “I hope we have our best meet of the season and bring another championship back to Milbank.”
