It Only Takes a Spark Cancer Walk marks its 26th year this Friday, June 9. Events begin at 5 p.m. at Lake Farley Park in Milbank. The annual walk helps to financially support over 100 individuals and families each year in their day-to-day struggle with cancer. It also offers encouragement to others who are touched by the disease and honors the memory of many.
Heather Storm will be the honorary chair for 2023. Duane Tillman will serve as the emcee. Rhianna Folk will lead the group in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The color guard from Birch-Miller American Legion Post 9, accompanied by Storm, will lead the Lap of Life. Members of the Core Committee, organizers of the walk, include president Alex Pauli, vice president Matt Scott, secretary Kasey Klemm, Jen Krause, Sarah Kasuske, Rachel Kirchberg, and Cheryl Schweer.
The traditional balloon release and lighting of the luminaries, along with the reading of the names, will be featured. Fireworks, carnival games, and a silent auction will be part of the fun. Food and drinks — everything from kettle corn and corn dogs to puppy chow and cold brew will be available on site. Things wind down on Saturday morning with breakfast and the awards ceremony at 6 a.m.
