Approximately 200 children have signed up for Summer Reading at the Grant County Public Library. A spokesperson for the library says 200 is a record number of attendees for the annual program that continues until July 12. All Together Now is the theme for 2023. Touch-a-Truck Meet-a-Hero started things rolling on May 31.
Area businesses and organizations displayed a variety of trucks for the children to explore, and the youngsters enjoyed sitting in the trucks, honking the horns and meeting the community heroes that drive them. Participants included: The Grant County Sheriff’s Department and their K-9 unit, the Milbank Police Department, the Grant-Roberts Ambulance Service, the Milbank Fire Department, Kibble Equipment, Twin Valley Tire, Al’s Body Shop, Dakota Valley Vet, the City of Milbank, Midwest Power Sports, Auto Max, GCC Ready Mix, Whetstone Valley Electric, Valley Queen, and United Hardware.
A Hot Diggety Dog Dinner was served by the Friends of the Library and volunteers from First Interstate Bank, the sponsor of the event. Following the meal, everyone enjoyed an amazing show staged by Brent Allan, a puppeteer from Round Lake, Illinois.
Summer Reading events continue each Wednesday through July 12. Children are also logging their reading time and redeeming their time for Book Bucks. Book Bucks can be redeemed for prizes in the library’s fun store which opens on June 26. Prizes are purchased using donations received from area residents and businesses. Donations are still needed and appreciated.
