Harold Binde, 91, of Summit, SD, passed away on June 30, 2023, in Milbank, SD.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Summit. Rev. Janet Miller will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

Harold Oliver Binde was born on May 2, 1932, in Waubay, SD. He was the son of Helge A. and Manda O. (Strom) Binde. Harold attended school in Summit and graduated from Summit High School with the Class of 1950.

Harold served in the United States Army, enlisting in 1954. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in 1955.

Harold returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage with Shirley Steinocker on June 24, 1956, at Mazeppa Lutheran Church. They were blessed with 67 years of marriage and three children: Valorie, Laurie, and Brad.

Harold’s career including working as a printer at Grant County Review in Milbank from 1957-1960; People’s State Bank in Summit from 1960-1985; and Cave Supply Company in Milbank from 1991-2003. He served on the board of directors and as president of the Watertown Chapter of the AIB (American Institute of Banking). In 1983, Harold was selected, along with 30 other bankers, to represent the banking industry and our nation on an official People to People Mission to Russia and the Peoples Republic of China.

Harold was a faithful member of Hope Lutheran Church and served at various times on the church council, as council president, Sunday School superintendent; Sunday School teacher, and church treasurer. He had a beautiful voice and was honored to have sang at over 120 funerals. He served on the board of directors of the South Dakota Bankers Association. He enjoyed flying and held a private pilot’s license.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley of Summit, SD; his children: Valorie Moen (Merton Moe) of Waubay, SD; Laurie (Raleigh) Knutson of Mina, SD; and Brad (Kristin) Binde of Yankton, SD; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers: Clarence (Sue) Binde of Hayti, SD; and Elmer (Doris) Binde of Onalaska, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Irene, Arlene, Melvin, Omar, and Irvin.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Hope Lutheran Church, Summit, SD.
