The Second Annual Larry Cantine Memorial Alumni Tennis Tournament was held on Saturday, July 29, at Cantine Courts in Milbank. Jim Dahl was crowned the champion of the tournament. He won a total of 14 games. Tom Waletich placed second. He won 13 games. Ron Waletich, David Waletich, and Will Mullenbach tied for third place. They each won 12 games.
“It was a perfectly sunny and 75-degree morning,” Zach Waletich, one of the tournament organizers and a player, said. “I was amazed again by the turnout. We had 24 alumni of the Milbank tennis program back to participate.”
He said the tournament also attracted a crowd from the community who lent their support from outside the courts. “It was awesome to see so many familiar Milbank community members come out to watch and be a part of remembering Larry’s legacy.”
The all-doubles tournament consisted of four rounds. Each round was played with a different doubles partner. “It was neat to see the variety of matchups,” Z. Waletich commented. “It was also a lot of fun to see Milbank graduates who spanned 30-plus years playing together.”
