Fighting unsettled weather and fierce competition, the Lady Bulldogs tennis team has been chasing that elusive win lately. Milbank hosted Watertown at Cantine Courts on Tuesday, September 5. They fell 9-0 to the Lady Arrows. That loss came on the heels of a much closer loss against Roncalli in Aberdeen on Tuesday, August 29.

Milbank 0 vs. Watertown 9

At No. 1 in singles, Hope Karels was defeated by Watertown’s Ellie Zink 6-1 and 6-1. Ashlynn Lamp was defeated by Leyla Meester 6-0 and 6-1. At No. 3, Jenna Korstjens was defeated by Faith Berg 6-3 and 6-1. Amelia Pederson, at No. 4, took the first set against Sophia Nichols at 6-2, lost the second at 6-0, but  was defeated in the tiebreaker at 10-8. Caitlyn Frerichs, playing at No. 5, was defeated by Cayda Weiss 6-0 and 6-0. Jericho Jones took the loss against Karlie Schulte at 6-1 and 6-0.

In doubles action, Karels and Lamp were defeated by Zink and Meester 6-0 and 6-0. Pederson and Nichols clashed again in doubles. Pederson, along with Korstjens, put up a fight, but were edged out by Berg and Nichols 6-1 and 7-6 (8-6). Charlotte Swanson and Payton Lamp were defeated by Weiss and Schulte 6-0 and 6-0.

Milbank 4 vs. Roncalli 5

The Lady Bulldogs’ rallied, but returned from Roncalli in Aberdeen with a loss on Tuesday, August 29. The Lady Cavaliers nicked them 5-4. Hope Karels at No. 1 brought home one point in singles for Milbank. She defeated Katherine Kretchman 6-4 and 6-4. At No. 2, Ashlynn Lamp was defeated by River Haskell 6-3 and 6-4. Jenna Korstjens was defeated by Raley Haskell 6-3 and 6-4. At No. 4, Amelia Pederson took down Anna Mitzel 6-3 and 6-2. She claimed another point for the Lady Bulldogs. Jericho Jones was defeated by Josie Mitzel 6-1 and 6-2.

Miilbank dominated the doubles matchups. Karels and Lamp defeated Kretchman and River Haskell 6-3 and 7-5 to put a point up for Milbank. Pederson and Korstjens defeated Raley Haskell and Rivett 6-1 and 6-4 to add another score for the Lady Bulldogs. Charlotte Swanson and Payton Lamp, however, could not hold off A. and J. Mitzel. The Milbank duo went down 6-2 and 6-2

What’s next? The Lady Bulldogs travel to Brandon Valley to face Spearfish and Vermillion on Friday, September 8. The Lady Spartans of Spearfish bring with them a season record of 3-5. The LadyTanagers sit at 2-4.
