If you were cheering for tennis legend Novak Djokovic and newcomer Coco Gauff during the U.S. Open or for the Lady Bulldogs in their match against Spearfish last week, you were not disappointed. Djokovic collected his 24th Grand Slam title. Gauff won the first Grand Slam title of her young career. The Lady Bulldogs picked up an important win. 

Milbank defeated Spearfish 5-4 at the triangular they hosted at Cantine Courts on Friday, September 8. In singles action, Milbank put up three points. Senior Hope Karels at No. 1 defeated Kate Mondloch 10-4. Sophomore Ashlynn Lamp at No. 2 defeated Jill Heisler 10-2, and at No. 3, Freshman Jenna Korstjens took down Kim Heisler 10-2. 

Amelia Pederson, a senior at MHS, was defeated by Allie Mondloch 10-5. Freshman Caitlyn Frerichs was defeated by Ava Berberick 10-1. At No. 6, junior Jericho Jones went down against Emma Gottlob 10-2.  In exhibition play, seventh-grader Payton Lamp was defeated by Lydia Schutz 8-2, and seventh-grader Charlotte Swanson was defeated by Elena McCabe 8-6.

In doubles play, Karels and A. Lamp took down K. and A.Mondloch 10-6. Korstjens and Pederson defeated J. and K. Heisler 10-1. Swanson and P. Lamp were defeated by Berberick and Gottlob 10-1. In exhibition play, Frerichs and Jones defeated Elizabeth Becker and Liberty Herew 8-0.

The Lady Bulldogs also faced Vermillion, but took a 7-2 loss. Hope Karels earned the lone win at No. 1. She defeated Annika Barnett 8-5. Ashlynn Lamp was defeated by Mya Halverson 8-2. Jenna Korstjens was defeated by Abby Hanson 8-1. Amelia Pederson took the loss against Saige Jorgenson 9-8 (10-8). Caitlyn Frerichs was defeated by Sakara White-Davis 8-0. Jericho Jones was defeated by Mia Barnett 8-2.

In doubles, Karels and Lamp went down against A. Barnett and Halverson 8-2. Korstjens and Pederson lost to Hanson and Delaney Smidt 8-6. Charlotte Swanson and Payton secured Milbank’s only point in the round with their victory over White-Davis and M. Barnett 8-6.

What’s next? Milbank traveled to Madison today, Tuesday, September 12. Madison hosted a triangular that also included Vermillion. On Friday, September 15, the Lady Bulldogs return to Madison to face Rapid City Christian.
