Leland Schwandt

Leland Schwandt, age 89, of Milbank, SD, formerly of Wilmot, passed away on September 18, 2023, in Milbank, SD.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 21, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Visitation will continue at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Kilborn Lutheran Cemetery in Corona.

Casket bearers will be: Robert Schwandt, Kyle Schwandt, Corey Schwandt, Daniel Schwandt, Kraig Prisinger, Darren Prisinger, and Mike Smith. Honorary bearers will be all friends and family.

Leland Charles Schwandt was born on January 26, 1934, on the family farm in Kilborn Township, to Charles and Laura (Schmidt) Schwandt. He attended country school for eight years and helped on the family farm through high school. In 1951, he graduated from Corona High School.

Leland was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona where he was baptized and confirmed. He served on several board positions and was a Sunday School Superintendent for many years.

Leland was united in marriage with Dorothy Schulte on October 9, 1955. Together they raised five children: Mike, Barb, Linda, Karmen and Mark.

Leland was a dairy farmer for 30 years. The Schwandt’s had the first controlled environment barn in South Dakota. After retiring from dairy farming, he started a small business manufacturing and selling tractor seats and backrests for Antique John Deere tractors nationwide. For the past 12 years, being completely retired, Leland and Dorothy were “snow birds” in Arizona. In 2018, the couple moved from the farm into Milbank and in 2019, Leland became a resident at St. Williams Care Center.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Dorothy of Milbank, SD; his five children: Mike (Linda) Schwandt of Wilmot, SD; Barb (Dar) Prisinger of Milbank, SD; Linda (Dale) Prisinger of Big Stone City, SD; Karmen Schwandt of Milbank, SD; and Mark (Sylvia) Schwandt of Thorton, CO; grandchildren: Robert Schwandt; Kyle (Melanie) Schwandt; Corey Schwandt; Daniel Schwandt; Karen (Mike) Smith; Darcy (Thor) Thonvold; Lauri Prisinger; Kraig (Amy) Prisinger; Darren (Lorriane) Prisinger; Amy (Mike) Locke; Katie Schwandt; and Eric Schwandt; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dallas (Clayton) Keeney; niece, Laurel; and great-grandchild, Devon Smith.
