George Gimmestad, age 96, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Fairway View Neighborhoods.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at United Congregational Church of Christ in Ortonville, MN. Gathering of family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will be at Mound Cemetery in Ortonville at a later date.

George Clifford Gimmestad was born on February 22, 1927, in Belview, MN, to Arthur and Ernestina (Dehnel) Gimmestad. The family moved to the Odessa/Bellingham, MN, area where he attended school and graduated high school with the Class of 1945.

In July of 1945, George was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, MN. He served with the 674th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. George was honorably discharged at Fort Lewis, WA, on December 18, 1946.

On February 20, 1955, George was united in marriage with Maryanne Hanson in Ortonville, MN. To this union, three children were born.

George worked as an interior and exterior decorator and worked in many homes in the Ortonville area putting in flooring or painting. He was an active member of the United Congregational Church of Christ and served on the Church Board.

George is survived by his daughters: Jane (Paul) Hegge of West Fargo, ND; and Katherine (Tim) Soboleski of Chaska, MN; son, Henry (Sherri) Gimmestad of Big Stone City, SD; grandchildren: Robert G. Lopez of Fargo, ND; Colby (Kirsten) Gimmestad of Derby, KS; Mikala Gimmestad of Watertown, SD; Alexa Soboleski of Baxter, MN; and Nicole Soboleski of International Falls, MN; great-grandchildren: Clemete Lopez of Winnepeg, MB; and Cyrus Lopez of Winnepeg, MB; sister-in-law, Lujean Gimmestad; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Maryanne in 2017; his parents; brothers: Melvin Gimmestad and Ernest Gimmestad; sisters: Ruth Anne Buerkle, Bertina Erdahl, and Dorothy Hovland; and parents-in-law, Henry and Anne Jane Hanson.
