Milbank’s Ashlynn Batchelor beat 180 girls from North Dakota, South Dakota, and Canada to take top honors at The Second Annual Border Battle in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Saturday, September 30. In a field of 21 complete teams, the Lady Bulldogs varsity team powered their way to third place led by A. Batchelor, Ella Koplin, and Bianca Berry. Each of the trio placed in the top 20 and earned a podium finish. All of the Millbank girls varsity runners finished in the top half of the pack.

Milbank’s head coach, Eric Townsend, said, “Ashlynn was the individual champion. She won by 50 seconds and set a Class A meet record. This is the second annual [Border Battle] meet and it has a big meet atmosphere with music, concessions, different races, etc. They did a great job of hosting this meet.”

According to Townsend, the boys varsity team finished in eighth place in a field of 32 complete teams, although the Bulldogs top-two competitors –Payton Brown and James Batchelor– were out due to illnesses.  “Both teams need to heal some illnesses heading into the NEC week as both teams should be in the hunt for an NEC team title,” Townsend commented.

The Bulldogs travel to the Northeast Conference (NEC) Meet in Webster on Thursday October 5. The varsity girls race starts at 1 p.m., and the varsity boys race follows. The JV races follow the varsity boys race.
