Homer Hankies are back!  And you can win a Hanky from The Valley Express.  Even if you can’t make it to a game, you can cheer the Twins on in style! See how to enter at the end of this article. The coveted 2023 Homer Hanky is a hybrid. It returns in the original handkerchief material, but in red with the slogan: We Believe!

The now famous Minnesota Twins Homer Hankies made their debut during the Twins 1987 playoff run. That day, October 7, is remembered as Number 11 on the top 100 Moments in Metrodome History. As the story goes, the Hankies were the brainchild of the StarTribune, but the business side of the Twins team was opposed to handing out the Hankies.  They believed the white flags would be too distracting for the players, and they were afraid the Twins would be called the “laughingstock of baseball.”

Regardless, 60,000 Hankies hit the stands before Game 1 of the ALCS and it only took until the second inning when Gary Gaetti knocked one out of the park to start the sea of Hankies waving.  At the end of the season, the Twins defeated the Tigers and the Cardinals to clinch the World Series title, and over 2.3 million Hankies were in the hands of fans.

In 1988, Homer Hankies came out again, but with the slogan: Just as Great in 88. The Twins, however, only finished second in the AL West.

In 1991, the Hankies returned with the slogan: The Magic is Back, and the Twins again won the World Series by defeating the Blue Jays and the Braves.

The Hankies then disappeared, along with any serious runs for the pennant for Minnesota, until 2002. The Hankies were revived from 2002 until 2009, excluding the years 2005 and 2008.

In 2010, a Hanky marked the inaugural game of the inaugural season at Target Field. A post-season Hanky also joined the collection. The souvenir showed up again during All-Star Week in 2014.

The Hankies, however, did no more panky until 2019, when the Twins won the AL Central regular season division title. That year, the Homer Hanky reappeared decked out in red. An MLB ruling banned white rally towels due to the difficulty they posed for batters trying to see a white baseball. The new Homer Hanky was also created with a thicker, towel-like fabric. In 2020, the white Hanky – still in the towel fabric– was back as no fans were allowed inside the stadium during Covid.

The Twins are on a roll this season and still in the race for the pennant.  Show your team spirit when you win a 2023 Minnesota Twins Homer Hanky and score a special souvenir!
