Marlys (Conraads) Hamann was born on September 19, 1934, on the family farm in Grant County, SD, to Theodore and Anna (Kahl) Conraads. She was baptized on May 15, 1935, at the Methodist Church in Big Stone City, SD, and was later confirmed on April 14, 1946, at the same church.

Beginning school at a country school, Marlys attended through third grade. She then began school in Big Stone City. Marlys graduated from Big Stone High School with the Class of 1952.

On October 15, 1954, Marlys was united in marriage with Arthur Hamann of Ortonville, MN, at the Methodist Church in Big Stone City. Together, Marlys and Arthur were blessed with three sons: Paul, Timothy, and Jerrod. The couple farmed three miles north of Ortonville and continued to farm in different areas until Arthur got a job with the City of Ortonville.

Marlys started working at Northwestern State Bank in 1952 and spent most of her life in banking except for the four years she worked at the ASCS Office (which is now USDA). She returned to banking and retired in 1997 from CenBank in Ortonville.

Throughout Marlys’s life, singing played a prominent role. Even as a child, she entertained visiting relatives with her songs. She sang in choirs, duets, trios, and quartets through the years. In 2012, Parkinson’s Disease affected her vocal cords. This was very hard for Marlys as she enjoyed singing, especially hymns at church.

Marlys did volunteer work with the Red Cross, OAHS Hospital office, and the food shelf. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ortonville, where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the Women of Trinity. Marlys enjoyed dancing with her husband as often as she could. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the company of a good book.

Left to cherish Marlys’s memory are her sons: Paul Hamann of Ortonville, MN; Timothy Hamann of Davenport, IA; and Jerrod (Nichole) Hamann of New Castle, CO; nine grandchildren: Joshua, Amy, Matthew, Theodore, Justice, Alexis, Ansley, Everley, and Lenora; three great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Frances Conraads, Elda Schmidt, and Bonnie Hamann; along with many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur in 2000; brothers: Harold Conraads and Harvey Conraads; and sister, Evelyn (Floyd) Dailie.
