Herbert Butzin, 99, a long-time Deuel County resident passed away on November 27, 2023, in Milbank.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial, with full military honors, will be held at the Revillo Cemetery.

Herbert Paul Butzin was born on April 5, 1924, on the family farm in Deuel County, SD.  He was the son of Paul and Augusta (Lemke) Butzin. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. He was united in marriage with Pearl Adell Mae Parker on June 5, 1944, in Madison, MN.

Herbert was drafted into the United States Army and served in Japan. He was honorably discharged and returned to the farm. He lived on the family homestead almost his entire life. He never fully retired until moving into Watertown two years ago.

Herbert’s life was consumed with farming. He was always willing to help his neighbors and never said “no”. He loved to fish…and fish…and fish! He enjoyed hunting and trapping. He was a wonderful bowler and has several trophies to his honor. He had a beautiful singing voice that surprised his family from time to time. Herbert was a storyteller and loved to make others laugh. He adored his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Carolina Seidell of Watertown, SD; Paul “Sonny” Butzin of Milbank, SD; Maria (Dean) Christensen of Clear Lake, SD; Crystal Myers of Ortonville, MN; one sister, Eva Peiker of Milbank, SD; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents: Paul and Augusta; his wife, Pearl; three grandchildren: Brian Seidell, Harvey Seidell, and Melissa Davis; two sons-in-law: Edmund “Butch” Seidell and Tom Myers.
