Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament

The Bulldog wrestlers took fifth place at the Marv Sherrill Dual Tournament in Watertown on Saturday, December 2. Owen Fischer and Tate Schlueter  each went 4-0 for Milbank. Aberdeen Central won the tournament

Place winners: (1)  Aberdeen Central; (2) Watertown; (3) Canby; (4) Tea Area;  (5) Milbank; (6) Huron; (7) Yankton; and (8) Mitchell.

In the championship, Aberdeen Central took down Watertown 40-26. Canby defeated Tea Area 40-31. Milbank defeated Huron 48-30, and Yankton beat Mitchell 49-30.

Josh Schmeichel, head coach for Milbank, said “This is a tough tournament… In our pool, we had Aberdeen, Yankton, and Tea. We knew going into it that we would have our hands full…”

Schmeichel said, ‘We started off with Aberdeen. Aberdeen is one of the top-ranked dual teams in the state, with many ranked wrestlers. Fischer was able to pull off a decision against the No. 5-ranked wrestler at 120. Our only other win was a fall by Schlueter at 175.” Schmeichel said some of the other matches that impressed him were Evan Folk, 106, losing by one point to the No-7-ranked wrestler; Joe French, 157, losing to the No-7-ranked wrestler by four points;  and Reese Rabe losing to the No.5-ranked wrestler by three points. The dual ended at 57-9.

“Next up was Yankton. We knew they were a beatable team,” Schmeichel commented. “This dual started off at the 113 weight class. Yankton had two opens. Then, Jacob Giles started us off with a fall and then another open for Yankton.” Milbank lost the next  five matches with two decisions, one open, and two falls.  At that point, the score was tied  24-24. ”In the next two matches, Tate and Jesse S. were able to pull off a couple of pins, but Hunter Reede got pinned and that put the score at 36-30 with two matches left,” Schmeichel explained. “Landon (Novy) was able to pull off a pin to secure the dual victory for us. Evan got a decision to stretch our lead by another three points to finish the dual at 45-30,”

The last team in Milbank’s pool was Tea. “Tea is one of the better teams in the state with many ranked wrestlers. Our only two wins were Joe French and Landon Novy, both with pins.” commented Schmeichel.  “Some other matches worth mentioning are Evan Folk losing by four to the No. 6- ranked wrestler at 106, Tate Schlueter losing by decision to the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 175 and the defending state champ at 170. Also, Jesse Schneck lost by four to the No.6- ranked wrestler at 190.” The final score was 60-12.

Schemeichel summed up the finals: “Going into the final round, our last dual was against Huron from the other pool. In this dual, we started off by getting pinned at 126, but we followed that with two pins and a decision. We had an open at 150, and Joe French had to face Moses Gross who was top ranked at 157. Joe lost by fall. From there we got on a winning streak with four wins in a row, one decision and three falls. At this point, we were at a score of 36-18 with four matches to go. We ended up going back and forth with falls and finished off the dual with a scored of 48-30.”

Schmeichel summed things up: “Overall we finished where I was hoping for so I am pleased about that. But, between Thursday night and Saturday, we came away with a lot of places to improve and motivation to get better.”

Currently we have three middle school girls and we are looking for more. Our girl wrestlers are Aza Scavariel and Mackenzie Mueller in eighth grade, and Kyra Tostenson, a seventh grader.”

In Watertown, they competed in the girls’ division. Kyra claimed  two varsity wins, and Mackenzie secured one. The trio will continue to compete in the middle school season and in some of the high school girl tournaments.
