St. Lawrence students will perform their annual Christmas program on Wednesday, December 13, at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The public is invited. Music director, Elizabeth Schulte, says, “This year’s musical is Journey to Bethlehem composed in 2016 by Erik Whitehill — not to be confused with the movie that just came out in theaters with the same title.”

The musical will be performed by the third through sixth graders. The sixth graders will be featured on solos, followed by choral refrains that are patterned after a classical oratorio style. Because the characters are asking for God’s help on their respective journeys, several of the solos are prayers. A recurring refrain from the chorus is this prayer: “I want my life to reflect Your glory; let my heart be Your home; I am open and listening; make of my life what You will! Calm my soul; peace, be still.”

Gianna Fonder plays the part of Mary, and Oakley Whipkey plays Joseph. Jenna Pederson is Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth; Keira Untalan is Gabriel; Riley Brown is the Herald Angel; and Beau Street is a shepherd. He is joined by fifth grader Zayne Frerichs. Oakley will double as a wise man, along with Riley Krause and Simon Hicks, both fifth graders.

Volunteer students will present an instrumental prelude before the program. The fourth graders will be featured on recorders playing “The Huron Carol.” Fifth and sixth grade students will chime “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and “Good King Wenceslas.” Students in preschool and kindergarten will sing “He is Here,” “Away in a Manger,” and “Three Wise Men.” First and second graders will sing “Advent Celebration,” “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” and “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow.”

Several soloists will be featured. The traditional carols “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” will end the program by inviting us all to “come to Bethlehem,” and bring “glory to the newborn King!”
