The Sioux Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced Landon Novy of Milbank has earned the Eagle Scout award –  the highest advancement honor the BSA offers to Scouts.  Novy will be recognized in a ceremony on Sunday, December 17, at 5 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Novy, a member of Milbank Troop 45 of Milbank,  now joins an elite group of only about four percent of all Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. According to Novy’s scoutmaster, Jeff Loutsch, an Eagle candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church, or synagogue-related service project to earn his Eagle. Novy organized the removal of an old fence and shrubbery, installed new corner posts, and designed and installed a sign at the Twin Brooks Cemetery.

As a member of his troop, he has served as senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, quartermaster, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, and chaplain aid. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow and has served as a lodge officer for the past two years. In addition, he completed National Youth Leadership training.

Novy joins other outstanding Americans from many fields who have become Eagle Scouts. For example, of the 12 men who have walked on the Moon,11 were Scouts. Eagle Scout Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, actually  contacted  the BSA National Jamboree by radio on his way to the moon in 1969. Armstrong said,  “Hello to all my fellow Scouts at Farragut State Park in Idaho…Apollo 11 would like to send them best wishes.”

Novy is the son of Chad and Carrie Novy of Milbank. He is a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and is active in band, theater, FFA, wrestling, and football at  Milbank High School, where he is a senior.
