Seven Milbank Wrestlers Place at Brookings Tourney

Seven Milbank wrestlers – five boys and two girls – placed in the top six at the annual Les Tlustos Wrestling Tournament in Brookings on Saturday, January 27. Landon Novy placed the highest for the Bulldogs with his second-place finish. Josh Schmeichel, head coach for Milbank, noted, “Brookings was a much tougher tournament this year than last year.” 

Highlights of the day included Novy beating the No.3-ranked wrestler with an 8-4 decision.” During the finals Landon came up against probably the best wrestler in the state and one of the top-five 285-pounders in the country,” Schmeichel commented. “He ended up getting stuck pretty quickly, but overall he had a great tournament and jumped himself up to be the No.3-ranked 285-pound wrestler.” Jacob Johnson claimed a fourth-place finish with three wins. He suffered only two losses to Class A-ranked wrestlers.

The Bulldogs left everything on the mat and had a few bumps and bruises to prove it. Joe French dislocated his pinky finger during his quarterfinals match. He was forced to default due to injury in what had shaped up to be a close match against the No. 4-ranked wrestler. “From there,” Schmeichel said, “ he came back and lost by just a point to the No. 5- ranked wrestler.” French ended by earning a solid win to secure fifth place. Jesse Schneck sustained a gash to his lip, but soldiered on to bring home sixth place.

Girls Division 
The Les Tlustos Tournament featured 18 girls teams. Rapid City Central won the tournament title by defeating Brookings 96-91. Milbank’s Mackenzie Mueller and Kyra Tostenson competed. Mueller secured a fifth-place finish; Tostenson received second place.

Results for the Lady Bulldogs:
138  Pounds
Mackenzie Mueller went 2-2 to finish in fifth place. In her first round, she recorded a pin. She was pinned in her next two matches and then finished the fifth and sixth-place match by earning a 7-3 decision.

185 Pounds
Kyra Tostenson faced the No. 4-ranked wrestler at 185 and finished in second place. Kyra pinned her opponent in the first period.” In the next two matches, Kyra got more aggressive and wrestled harder than I’ve seen her before,” Schmeichel commented. “She ended up getting pinned in both matches, but progressively got better in both matches”

Groton Tournament – January 27
Milbank also sent a select group of wrestlers to Groton on Saturday, January 27. Coach Schmeichel commented, “The competition this year was the toughest by far I have ever seen at the Groton Tournament. We ended up with only two place winners, but got a lot of experience for the JV and younger wrestlers.”

Andrew Folk finished in sixth place.

215 Pounds  “Hunter Reede ended up losing a close 9-6 decision in his first round and had to wrestle the whole way back in a 16-man bracket,” Schmeichel said. “In the third-place match, he ended up meeting the Webster wrestler he lost to at the dual Milbank hosted. “Hunter was able to redeem himself and pull off a pin in the beginning of the second period,” Schmeichel said.
