Milbank defeated Estelline-Hendricks 78-58 at home on Monday, February 12. Joe Schulte was fire! Schulte dropped in 30 points and added 10 rebounds to put up another double-double. He hit 13 of his 16 shots from the floor and two of his three free throws.

Garrett Mertens was also blazing hot. He put up 21 points and made seven assists. Mertens added four boards and two steals. Sam Rick pumped in two 3-pointers and downed one from two to finish with eight points. Graham Lightfield and Este Abrego-Gonzalez each scored six. Lightfield added six assists. Abrego-Gonzalez also grabbed five boards.

Jaxson Wildung posted four points, an assist, and four rebounds. Ryan Keeton made a bucket. Emmett Hanson hit one free throw. Lightfield, Rick, and Keeton seized two rebounds apiece; Braylen Bowsher and Jack Howard each collected one.

The Bulldogs used the first quarter to size up their opponent, and found themselves trailing 28-20 going into the second. Milbank dominated the remainder of the game, and only pulled back in the final minutes.

The Bulldogs outshot the Redhawks 54 to 42 percent, including 39 to 31 percent from long range. Milbank also smoked them at the line at 72 to 44 percent.

Estelline-Hendricks finished with two players in double figures. Wyat James led the Redhawks with 16 points. Kyler Carlson made 10 points. James also led his team in rebounds with six. Braxton Jongeling got four.

The Dawgs now have a four-game winning streak. The victory over Estelline-Hendricks boosted Milbank’s season record to 12-5 overall and 5-1 in Region 1A.

What’s next? The Bulldogs head into their last three games of the regular season with Webster, Madison, and Tiospa Zina. First, the boys go on the road to face Webster for a conference matchup on Friday, February 16. The Bearcats hold a 8-10 record but sit at 5-3 on their home court. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.

Milbank’s JV team claimed the “W” against Estelline-Hendricks at 50-33. Ryan Keeton led the Bulldogs with 12 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Braylen Bowsher recorded eight points and two rebounds. Jack Howard put up seven points and four rebounds. Howie Zemlicka and Charlie Peery scored six apiece. Zemlicka also had an assist and a block. Peery had one rebound. Bryan Meyer made four points and pulled down six rebounds.Layten Osowski contributed three points and grabbed five rebounds. Harley Zemlicka and Sam Rick each made two points. Rick added three boards.

The Bulldogs connected on 41 percent of their shots from the floor, including one of three from behind the arc. They landed five of nine free throws for 56 percent.

The Redhawk’s center, 6’2” junior Braxton Jongeling, led the Estelline-Hendricks JV squad with 10 points. Ethan Axtell made six points. August Degal and Larkin Schulte each scored five. Degal, a freshman, led the Redhawks with seven rebounds.

C Team Game
Milbank 36 vs. Estelline-Hendricks 12
The Bulldogs C team flattened the fledgling Redhawks 36-12. Jeter Scoular and Harley Zemlicka each put up seven points. Zemlicka added two assists and five rebounds. Jaxson Wiese scored five points and two assists. Ethan Owen had four points, an assist and three steals. Garrett Weber, Mack Koplin, and Aiden Kelly made three points each. Layten Osowski and Liam Street scored two points apiece. Osowski made four steals and a rebound. Street had three rebounds.

Overall, Milbank hit 14 of 38 attempts from the floor and ended with a 37 percent shooting average. The Bulldogs made five of their seven free throws for 71 percent. They gave their opponent only two tries from the charity stripe, but both went unclaimed.
