Milbank’s Second Annual Drive Your Tractor to School Day dawned early for students who arrived by tractor and other machinery. Topping out at about 20-25 m.p.h. made the trip just a little bit slower, but by the time the bell rang, the parking lot at MHS was lined with equipment representing millions of dollars that have been invested in agriculture in the Milbank area. The 2024 Drive Your Tractor to School Day on Tuesday, March19, coincided with National Ag Day and Milbank’s Ag Day celebration. It showcased the importance of farming and farm safety in our community.

The models varied from spanking new to vintage cool, but they all illustrated honor and support for generations of farmers and the joy of farming. Tucker Giesen rolled up in a shiny new 2024 Fendt 724. He said, “I drove it because it is the best tractor ever made.” Jairek Frazee commented , “I brought a pedal tractor for National Ag Day. I thought it would be funny.” Ethan Rethke added, “I drove mine because it’s goofy looking,” and Daniel Shelstad commented, “I drove my CASE tractor because it’s important for people to see all the young farmers in the U.S.”

Drive Your Tractor to School has unofficially been a tradition for decades, however, it became a unique day connected with FFA back in the 1980s. MHS and its FFA chapter implemented their inaugural event in 2023. This year, the number of participants grew to 14.
