Milbank’s Special Olympics basketball teams both earned second-place finishes at the 2024 Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament and Cheerleading Competition held at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell on March 23-24.
The high school team – the Milbank Schoolers – went 2-1 to claim the honor.
“It was incredible to see the improvement the team has made throughout the season,” said Abbey Trapp, Milbank’s head coach. “They played as a team and everyone scored. It was great to see all the smiles on their faces when they ended their last game with 30 points for the big win!”
The adult team from Milbank also finished at 2-1 to also win second place in the state for their division. According to the coaches Keath Rick and Laura Maag, “The team worked hard in every game, and it paid off!”
MIlbank also brought home three Spirit- Sportsmanship awards. Jaden Athey, Michael Cordell, and Makenzie Wittrock each collected an individual award.
“Thank you to all the families, staff members, and friends who traveled down to Mitchell to watch these athletes compete,” Trapp commented. “ We appreciate all your support.”
