Milbank Middle School and MHS were host to 264 entries during the South Dakota Bandmasters event on April 5-6. Bandmasters is designed for musicians in fifth through eighth grade. Milbank entered 120 students and students from Big Stone City, Browns Valley, Castlewood, Wilmot, and Ortonville also participated.

All performances were judged on: tone, intonation, technique, interpretation, musical effect, and other performance factors. The ratings include Superior (I), Excellent (II), Good (III), and Fair (IV). Judges can also decide to add a plus or minus following the rating.

The instrumentals from Milbank received:
18 Superior Plus,
80 Superior,
12 Superior Minus,
5 Excellent Plus,
26 Excellents,
3 Good Plus,
7 Goods

Evy Liebe, Camryn Sovell, Macy Mueller, Kristi Seehafer, and Deb Rausch provided accompaniment. Mrs. Susan Karels is the director of Milbank’s bands for grades six and up. The fifth-grade band instructors are Karels, Rausch, and Mrs. Karlene Thomas.
