The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs crushed the competition in the Northeast Conference Track and Field Meet on Thursday, May 9, in Sisseton. “The boys team won their eighth-consecutive NEC team title. The girls won their fourth-consecutive NEC title,” stated Eric Townsend, head coach for Milbank. The girls also collected their fifth win in the last six years. Townsend also commented on the weather at the event, “It was easily the best we’ve had for a meet all season, and the performances and results showed.”

“Individually, a number of individuals posted outstanding performances and cracked the top 10 lists in school history,” Townsend said. Payton Brown broke the school record in the 800-meter run with his time of 1:56.76. James Batchelor ran the tenth-fastest 3200- meter run with his time of 10:06.41.  Mason Allen broke the school record and rebroke his own freshman record in the javelin. He hurled the spear 123’ 1”. Rylee Scoular improved her No. 3 record on the varsity honor roll in the pole vault with a jump of 9’ 3”.  Bree Townsend moved up to No. 3 on the varsity honor roll in the javelin with her throw of 79’ 1”.  Katie Kruger improved her No. 5 spot on the honor roll in the javelin with her toss of 65’ 1”.  “Overall, there were 54 season bests that day,” noted Coach Townsend. 

The  boys medley team composed of Jayden Johnson, Emmett Hanson, Bryan Meyer, and Brown also competed in the Mustang Invitational at Webster on Friday, May 10. They finished at  3:36.88 to win first place. It is the second-quickest boys medley time in school history,” Coach Townsend stated.

What’s next? The Bulldog track and field teams head to the Last Chance Meet in Baltic on Thursday May 16. The top 24 athletes throughout the season in each event qualify for State.  The state track meet is set for Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25, in Sioux Falls.
