The 2024 South Dakota Girls High School State A Golf Tournament was held at Bakker Crossing in Sioux Falls for the second time in three years. According to Milbank’s head coach, Mark Keeton, “From my experience, this is very unusual, but being familiar with the layout was a big help.” Senior Shaylee Schuchard was the only MHS player who qualified for the tournament. She shot 107 in the first round (June 3) and 105 in the second (June 4) to bring home 68th place for the Lady Bulldogs.

“Shaylee played well both days and came in with scores under her season average,” Keeton commented. “Like every round, there are a few holes we would like to do over, but Shaylee had a lot of great shots over two days. On Day 2, we were having a great round, when there was an unfortunate rain delay with one hole left. That seemed to end the momentum.”

Katlin Strain of St. Thomas More was the medalist with her score of 152 (77/75). Tori Peterson of Sioux Falls Christian and Ari Jacobs of West Central were next. Both carded 154 —Peterson with two 77s and Jacobs with 78 in Round 1 and 76 in Round 2.

The top-five team finishes went to: (1) Sioux Falls Christian – 634 (2) Vermillion – 666 (3) West Central – 694 (4) Madison – 696 and (5) St. Thomas More 729.

“In the end it was great having Shaylee qualify for her second state tournament,” Keeton said. “Her leadership on and off the course will be missed next year.”
