Somebody’s planning to pull a fast one on Main Street in Milbank this Sunday! But don’t worry the police, firefighters, and ambulance crew will be there, too. It’s all part of Milbank’s first-ever fire truck pull to benefit the Special Olympics.

The tournament will be run bracket style with the fastest team continuing to advance. If you haven’t pre-registered, but want to join the fun, you can still pull it off. Get your team together and sign up on the day of the event. Gloves will be provided. Milbank coaches and firefighters have volunteered to assist. Registration on August 18 is at 3 p.m. The first pull starts at 4 p.m.

A standard fire truck weighs between 12 and 28 tons, but that hasn’t stopped over 20 teams (22 and counting) from registering. Each 10-person team paid the entry fee of $50 per member. Half the money raised goes to the Special Olympics in Milbank – currently 40 athletes – and 50 percent goes to South Dakota’s Special Olympics. The money sent to the state will allow for free membership for Milbank athletes and their fees will be waived at all state events.

Fire truck pulls to fundraise for Special Olympics and other groups have gained in popularity over the last 10 years. The idea was gleaned from the first competitions pulling motorized tractors that started nearly 100 years ago in Missouri and Kentucky in 1929.

Sunday’s weather is expected to be sunny and in the lower 80s, so look for the ice cream truck to whet your whistle or stop at The Bank for a cool drink. Kids can check out the fire engine, police car, and ambulance parked and ready for viewing on Main Street.

Pull the plug on whatever chores you signed up for this Sunday, grab the family, and head to Main Street for something you don’t see every day – the first-ever Milbank fire truck pull.
