The Bulldogs hosted the annual POET Golf Invitational at Whetstone Creek Golf Course on Thursday, August 22. Milbank’s Jonathan DeBoer landed in a three-way tie for first place, but after the playoff, he finished third.  DeBoer carded an 81 – just nine over par – Finn Anderson from Roncalli and Jack Mack from Watertown also each recorded 81. Anderson took first and Mack was second.

Ryan Keeton was the next highest place winner from MHS. He secured 14th place after he tied at 89 with Carter Simon of Groton. Owen Fischer brought home 22nd place at 92. Charlie Peery claimed 23rd place at 93. Greg Grabow came in 35th with his score of 106. Thomas Bass was 43rd at 119.

Milbank earned fifth place as a team, but according to Mark Keeton, head coach of the Bulldogs, “Once again, it was a tight race for the team rankings. “There were only 18 strokes separating first place and fifth place.” Watertown won the tournament with their score of 337.  Milbank was fifth at 355.

Team rankings:

  1.  Watertown –337
  2. Aberdeen Roncalli –339
  3. Groton Area –345
  4. Sioux Valley –349
  5. Milbank –355
  6. Aberdeen Central –400
  7. Sisseton –408
  8. Redfield –342 – (Did not field a complete team)

“As a team, everyone needs to cut just a few strokes off their score, and we can come out on top,” Coach Keeton suggested. “I really like the attitude and effort this year and it’s only going to get better.”

What’s next? The Bulldogs faced the Tiospa Zina Wambdi at Dakota Winds Golf Course on August 27. Look for those results coming right up here on The Valley Express.
