Whetstone Valley Strings students presented a recital at Living Word Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 23. Twenty-four violin and cello students performed a variety of solos and ensembles, including folk songs and classical pieces from Suzuki Books 1-6, hymn arrangements, fiddle tunes, and Christmas carols.   

Book 1 students performed “Frére Jacques,” “Boil Cabbage,” and “Hoedown.”  Book 2 students performed “Old English Dance.” Advanced students performed arrangements of “Be Thou My Vision,” “Trepak” from The Nutcracker, and fiddle tunes “Skye Boat” and “Buffalo Gals.”

Students recognized for their achievements this semester: Felix Tschetter, Hadassah Johnson, and Yanderyn Olivares – Twinkle Graduation.  Eno Hicks – Suzuki Cello Book 1 Half Book Review. Joseph and Traci Tschetter – Suzuki Violin Book 3 Graduation. Krista Gingerich performed her final recital after seven years of study.  

Karen Esh, one of instructor Elizabeth Schulte’s original Milbank students who now lives in Virginia, was honored as a special guest. Miriam Schwenn accompanied the group pieces and several ensembles on piano. Dave Schulte recorded the recital and ran sound.

Whetstone Valley Strings was started in Milbank seven years ago by E. Schulte, whose experience includes teaching orchestra, private lessons, and directing youth symphonies in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, and Columbus, Ohio.
